In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Historic Leader

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
