The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The freezers were placed behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in the month of June. The elder brother, a colleague of the female victim, told law enforcement last week that there had been an accident—but rejected murder.

Speaking to the media previously, a official for the legal authorities said the brothers were being held on "strong suspicion of murder".

The identities of those concerned have been withheld by law enforcement, in accordance with Austrian law.

The vanishing of the mother and child was first reported by the woman's cousin, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Investigators said the male associate claimed at the time she had taken an long journey with her daughter to visit her parents in Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then found to have been used overseas on multiple occasions.

Yet when investigators searched the woman's home, her cellphone was discovered.

Someone also reported hearing a loud noise in the flat, and screams of "mama" on the occasion the two were believed to have vanished.

An expanded official inquiry was launched, with authorities finding multiple communications sent from the woman's phone—among them a job termination message to her employer and texts to the male associate.

Authorities confirmed a significant cash transfer was also transferred to the suspect.

Katja Tersch told reporters on Tuesday that a rented space had been leased before the mother and child went missing and a cooling unit had been installed within.

The male siblings took out the freezer from the unit on the day the woman and her child vanished, she said. And a shortly afterward, they acquired another freezer.

Investigators say they believe this points to the fatalities were premeditated.

"The cause of death could not be determined due to the condition of the victims," the official said.

The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—stated the precise timeline is not yet known, but the bodies were expertly concealed and were not found during a prior examination.

While the brothers were arrested in the summer, it was only on November 12 that the elder brother admitted to an incident and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any intent to kill, investigators said.

Meanwhile, his younger brother admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but disputed awareness of a killing.

The pair are at this time in pre-trial detention in detention centers in two Austrian cities, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative stated the "reported homicide of mother and child... represents the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and uncovers a cruel system".

"Women and girls are falling victim to homicide due to the simple reality that they are of the female gender," they continued.

"Gender-based killings are a deeply rooted and issue affecting all of society that we must fight resolutely."
