The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates club history in a pivotal European match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
