The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations continue
Citizens have gathered across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official memorials until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the proposal.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The representative said the morning session ended without tangible results, amid differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Points in Discussions
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future management of the territory
Public Sentiment
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No location seems like home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."
"When we see all home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We need do every compromise needed for the hostages to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israelis want the conflict to end in as payment for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.
From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, especially my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of several people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking assistance to the south, medical staff said.
