The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks made him a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
