The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
