Meteorologists are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow expected over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather could to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
