Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
