LA Battles Record-Breaking High Temperatures Only Days Following Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring heavy downpours that led to inundation across parts of the city, LA is now grappling with unseasonably hot temperatures for late February.
Record-Shattering Readings
On Friday midday, the temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in central LA, according to the National Weather Service. This breaks the previous daily record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was set just last year.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on NWS charts for the region.
Safety Alerts
The weather service issued a warning that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sudden spike in heat arrives just after a intense storm system that pummeled the area recently. That storm unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to higher elevations, causing flash flood warnings for many residents.
Sadly, the conditions also caused a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests cooler conditions is coming. The heat were predicted to decrease to around 61°F (16°C) in central Los Angeles by Friday night.
Other locales that hit 90°F featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to experience the high 80s.
For the weekend, central LA can see weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the week ahead.
