Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
