A extensive search and rescue mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated boats transporting aid cargo en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Maritime Search Efforts Initiated

The Mexican government has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were transporting no fewer than nine sailors, according to a official statement.

The vessels had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with multiple power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with suitable safety systems and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy stated.

The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"The group is collaborating completely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Earlier Relief Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, dubbed "Granma 2.0" after the yacht in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, bikes and provisions.

Wider Geopolitical Context

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded efforts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""critical" lack of essential goods, with over 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba because of power shortages.

Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from several leaders underscoring the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.

Reacting to previous comments, a high-ranking official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Accounts suggest that initial phases of discussions had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its command to find the boats and secure the well-being of the sailors.

To date, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
